Ponzanello is very close to the stunning  Apuan Alps, where Michelangelo came to choose his marble blocks, and the imposing forested ridge of the Apennines with its National Park.  In the ancient region of Lunigiana (the northern-most tip of Tuscany) and close to the valley of the Garfagnana, the village is within day-trip distance of Barga, Lucca, Florence, Pisa, the beautiful coast and beaches of the Cinque Terre, Carrara and Massa, and the cities of Parma and Genoa.  Close at hand are the historic village of Fosdinovo, the beautiful town of Sarzana, the busy port of La Spezia, and the shops, services, fort and museum of Aulla.  There are railway stations at Sarzana, Aulla and Rometta, and a regular village bus service.
